Coffee Meditation? What? I guess because I have been mediating for over 20 years and recently had the experience of dharma transmission (don’t worry, it didn’t hurt
) I get asked about adding a meditation practice into our busy lives. You have probably read all of the articles, studies, etc that say adding a moment in our lives of silence and contemplation is probably a good thing for your mind and body, but you are going at full speed and don’t have any idea where you would find 20 minutes to sit quietly. This is especially true for parents, small business owners, and probably true for you. I have the easy answer… coffee mediation.
What is Coffee Meditation?
It is quite literally sitting quietly sipping a cup of your favorite hot beverage and being in the moment. This is the easiest mediation session you will ever do and you can do it anywhere. You can do Coffee Meditation at Starbucks, in your car, at your desk at work, in your office, at your kitchen table, on the porch – wherever you can bring a hot drink.
I just learned about Coffee Meditation. Wow! Mind blown.

What’s the trick, you ask? Nothing. You just sit quietly and drink your beverage. Don’t respond to your phone buzzing and alerting you, don’t run onto the next thing with beverage in hand, and instead just be in the moment of you sitting and enjoying your cup of coffee, tea or hot cocoa. As you start to sit there you will start to notice your mind thinking compulsively about any random thing. I have redecorated my office in my head I don’t know how many times. The trick is to just say “thinking” and let the thought go. Don’t feel bad about thinking. It is what the mind is totally conditioned to do. Instead just label the moment you realize that you had spun out onto some fantasy, worry or idea and come back to your steaming cup. As long as you keep coming back to the act of drinking your hot beverage you are meditation on the moment.
Can It Really Be That Simple?
Yep. For all the crosslegged, facing a wall, chanting that you THINK meditation is you can bring it home and reap the physical and mental benefits just by doing a daily coffee meditation. Your mind will start to settle. Your body will relax. You will enjoy that moment and, possibly, want it every day and in other moments, too.
FAQ About Coffee Mediation
Does the beverage have to be coffee? Nope. Just something hot.
Why does it have to be hot? Hot beverages have to cool. They have to be blown on. They have to be slowly sipped. If you are gulping down a Coke you probably aren’t aware of anything. The idea is to take a moment and slow down.
How long does this really take? As long as it takes you to drink your cup of coffee.
What if my mind wanders all over the place? That’s ok. Once you recognize that you have been planning your vacation to Bali just say to yourself “thinking” and come back to your beverage.
Am I drinking the coffee or just holding it? Oh goodness. Who would want to just hold a cup of steaming hot coffee? No, you are drinking it like normal. You are just paying attention to drinking it.
Does it really work? Yep. I promise. You are really meditating and you are practicing mindfulness in real world applications. This is a big deal and will help you later on when I share about how to do this while washing the dishes.
