It seems that sometimes I have to relearn some things, but there are also just some things I’ve learned recently in business and in life. Some of these lessons are easy, but mostly I’m still working on solutions.
You know that the meeting isn’t going to go well when you start with what they did wrong. Sigh. I KNOW better. Tell them the good things. Tell them the wins. THEN launch into what you are looking to see as improvement. Then wrap it all up on how everyone gets better when we adopt the new plan. Was that how I did it today? No. No it isn’t and it didn’t go well. Damn. This was one I knew!
Perhaps we can divide people into two types: those that thing holding onto all of the information gives them power and those that think giving information freely makes everyone better. I’m in the free information camp. I’m not sure HOW you sway those to that side. It’s almost ideological.
I’ve learned some things recently. Have you? Share!

If you want to schedule a meeting with me set a time. Just set a time and if I can’t make that time I’ll suggest two that do work for me. Open ended email without an actual meeting time is just a waste of time for everyone.
If you call a meeting please have an agenda. That everyone knows about. Everyone needs to be on the same page and feel like their time is valued.
Be nice. Just be nice. In person. Online. Everywhere. Everyone is trying and if they aren’t doing it to your satisfaction that is just the way it is. You being a jerk to them won’t make them better.
If you call repeatedly or email me constantly and I haven’t responded yet I’m not going to be inclined to respond faster. It’s just an annoyance at that point. I will respond, but it will be when I’m back at my desk and when I can answer with some kind of coherent message. Multiple calls should only be for emergencies.
