Let’s Share the Sunshine of Others on Our Social

LetsShareSunshineLast Saturday I taught part of my Platform Series through the Village Writing School and I talked a little about sharing the sunshine on our social media and in our blogs. I had a few questions about what I meant and thought I would share about a few projects I’m currently working on and what that looks like in my own work.

What the Heck is Sharing the Sunshine?

Social media has this amazing ability to share information with our sphere and we can use all of that time to blast about ourselves or we can use it to share the light with other people that are doing amazing things – essentially sharing the sunshine.

If I share about someone else will I lose them from liking me?

Gosh no. Do you think that any major league sports player feels like wearing Nike emblazoned apparel diminishes from their own brand? Nope. (Granted, they are getting paid to wear that, but we can talk about that later.) Do celebrities feel like the spotlight dims when they shed the light on a cause or idea? No.

When you shed the light on someone else you show your bigger world, larger spirit and a belief in abundance (there is enough for everyone) and that is contagious.

I believe in #SocialGood and I’m going to #SharetheSunshine on those doing good work!

How I am Sharing the Sunshine.

WeThePeopleI’m currently running a campaign on my personal Facebook profile called #WethePeople where I am sharing a story and spotlight on someone in my life that is special and I admire. I’m running this through November and it has been great fun to figure out who those people are and write little stories about how awesome they are. I started it because I was exhausted (already) by the political sentiment thrown around Facebook and inspired by fellow blogger at 4 Hats and Frugal.

#NWARKCaresI’m also part of the team putting #NWArkCares together with the Northwest Arkansas Blogger community to share the light on social issues in #NWARK each month. We started in September with literacy and in October are tackling domestic violence. We are talking about the issue and giving local resources that respond directly to each issue. Totally not about me and totally awesome to come together as a group.

I had a conversation, via text, with my #TCOYOS ladies and we are working to shine the light and promote each other and our community better online. This could just be a social media post, a blog post, sharing a story – anything that puts each other out into the community brighter. They do a lot of amazing things, but because they are all so busy people might not know about it. In fact, I am sure they don’t and we are making sure we are sharing their stories.

#EurekaFallColorFinally, I am working with a group in my small town to form #TeamEureka to develop social media campaigns that benefit our town. We are starting with a #EurekaFallColor campaign highlighting the Leaf Peak Season and #EurekaAfterDark to highlight bar culture. Both really fun campaigns that don’t have anything that do with me personally, but can be part of a larger effort.

What about you?

Share a post about a favorite customer, share about your town, share about someone in your community doing amazing things – it doesn’t always have to be about you. We have the power to make our social media anything we want it to be – you just have to be willing to make that happen.

I’d love to hear how you are sharing the sunshine in the comments! Let’s inspire each other.
